Our Journey
Iqra Edu Centre was established in 2019 and is situated in Hammanskraal Kanana, opposite Jubilee Mall. The centre’s initial project focused on the empowerment of the visually impaired, with a database of approximately 250 visually impaired individuals. As part of this initiative, The Garden Social Services distributes food hampers twice annually to visually impaired beneficiaries.
The empowerment programme for the visually impaired led to the establishment of Iqra Edu Centre as a second project. In 2020, a dedicated building was constructed for the centre. The crèche commenced operations in January 2021 with three educators and 20 children. By the end of the year, enrolment increased to 80 learners. The crèche provides high-quality foundation education and has received excellent feedback from surrounding primary schools.
One of the most significant projects at the centre are the two boreholes, which benefits both the centre and the broader community. Hammanskraal experiences severe water shortages, and the borehole has been a vital resource. In 2024, Kanana was further supported with the installation of a second borehole at Lehwelereng Secondary School.
The centre also operates a Plant and Eat programme, teaching community members to grow and consume produce from their own gardens. In addition, Iqra Edu Centre has established a home for disadvantaged children.
A daily empowerment class for the visually impaired is conducted at the centre, where participants engage in activities such as making pillows and sewing clothes, curtains, and uniforms. This programme promotes independence, skill development, and improved quality of life for visually impaired participants.
Future Plans
- Establishment of a bakery (Estimated cost: R120,000)
- Establishment of sewing classes (Estimated cost: R20,000)
- Establishment of a mini sports field for children (Estimated cost: R40,000)
These initiatives aim to motivate the community toward self-sufficiency through baking and sewing, enabling income generation within their neighbourhoods.
